# Quickstart

> Install the CLI, sign in, and read your first capture

## Prerequisites

* macOS, to install and run the CLI
* An iOS 17+ device running an app with the [basset SDK](https://github.com/basset-org/basset-ios) linked
* A basset account — `basset auth login` creates one on first sign-in

## Get started

<Steps>
  <Step title="Install">
    One universal binary, signed and notarized, through basset's own Homebrew tap:

    ```bash theme={"dark"}
    brew install basset-org/tap/basset
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    Opens a browser for a device-grant login. No password is stored on this machine — only a signed credential.

    ```bash theme={"dark"}
    basset auth login
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find an app to target">
    ```bash theme={"dark"}
    basset app list
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Ask a device for readings">
    Names the instruments, the app, and why. `-i` repeats for more than one instrument; `basset menu` lists every instrument and what it accepts.

    ```bash theme={"dark"}
    basset request create \
      --app <app> \
      --purpose "Hunting a hitch on the settings screen" \
      -i concurrency.mainThreadHang \
      -i runtime.stackSamples
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read what comes back">
    Streams readings as they arrive, one JSON object per line, then stops on its own:

    ```bash theme={"dark"}
    basset request tail <request-id>
    ```

    Or read the whole capture once it's done — colored and grouped by launch at a terminal, plain JSON for an agent piping it:

    ```bash theme={"dark"}
    basset request get <request-id>
    ```
  </Step>
</Steps>

  Stop a request as soon as its readings answer the question, rather than letting it run out: `basset request stop <request-id>`.
</Callout>
